Mey move threatens Dunbia jobs

Mey will now move its beef cutting and packing operation to ABP Perth, but the lamb processing operation will stay with Dunbia.

Mey Selections managing director John Strak said: "Mey Selections has always tried to get the best deal possible for its farmers and came to the view that having specialist beef and lamb processors was better than trying to process both species.

"The job changes are very regrettable as far as Dornoch is concerned, but in terms of the region, it will be much better."

Mey Selections is the brand name of North Highlands Products, the company formed by Caithness farmers as part of Prince Charles’ initiative to promote economic development in the North Highlands.

Scotch Premier Meats, part of the Aberdeen and Northern Marts Group, which owns the Dornoch slaughterhouse and leases out part of the premises to Dunbia, remains unaffected.
