Fire destroys a part of Danish Crown abattoir

A fire has destroyed part of Denmark's largest slaughterhouse.

The abattoir, based in Blans, in the South of the country, and owned by Danish Crown caught fire on Monday.

The cooling tunnel and a cooling department have been destroyed completely. It is estimated that no slaughterings can take place for at least two-to-three months.

The abattoir slaughtered about 45,000 pigs a week, and this week slaughterings were scheduled to go up to 56,000.

The animals will now have to be taken care of by slaughterhouses in the direct surroundings.
