FSA to review TSE programme
The Food Standards Agency's Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) division is organising its five-year review of the TSE Research Programme.
An open meeting is to be held on 9 July to give scientists and members of the public an opportunity to comment on the 2002-7 research programme and discuss the future direction of TSE at the FSA.
The research programme aims to provide a sound scientific basis for estimating the possible food-borne risk from TSEs and to allow proportionate and enforceable controls to be put in place to protect the consumer from the risk of exposure to TSE infectivity.
The review is being carried to evaluate the success of the programme, which covers the period from April 2002 to March 2007, with a budget of approximately £15m.
Projects have addressed the TSE's policy objectives, such as the review of the over-30-month scheme, TSE diagnostics, pathogenesis, epidemiology and emerging TSE issues, highlighted following advice from expert groups such as the Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee.
