Farmhouse Gammon wins BPEX award

East-Sussex based Southover Foods has struck gold in a British Pig Executive (BPEX) Foodservice competition.

The company, located near Brighton, took home a gold medal for its honey roast farmhouse gammon from the BPEX Foodservice Pork Product of the Year Competition 2007.

A spokeswoman for the company said the gammon had also been elected an award-winning third place in the Best Cured Product category.

Southover managing director, Steve Pearce, collected the award at a reception held at the Butchers Hall in London earlier this week.

The speciality food company has scooped gold medals for both its new cooked back bacon and the four-times award winning Southover gammon (Great Taste Awards, gold, sliver and bronze 2004-2006, top award in the Excellence in Food and Drink Awards 2006, Starters & Buffet Products Category), with Southover dry gammon gaining a bronze medal.

MD Steve Pearce, a butcher by trade, claims the secret of the success of his prize-winning hams is twofold.

He said: "Firstly, we use only the highest quality free-range pigs to be assured of producing the very finest and most succulent hams.

"But the curing process is just as important. Our legendary 'curing recipe' is a well-guarded secret as it's responsible for the unique flavour and quality of our gammons."

Southover Foods will be showcasing all these hams and more at the IFE Show later this month.
