Westaway Sausages, the West Country-based specialist sausage maker, has invested £500k in its production facility – a move that has resulted in a 75% increase in capacity.

The company has installed a new high-speed production line, capable of producing an additional 2,400 packs of sausages every hour.

Already recognised for food safety best-practice, having been certified as ‘A Grade’ by the BRC Global Standards, the new plant is a major step forward for Westaway Sausages in its aim to be an industry leader in the area of food safety and hygiene.

The company has appointed a Hygiene Czar to implement of a number of processes and procedures to ensure even higher standards of cleanliness in handling and processing.

Charles Baughan, managing director of Westaway Sausages, said: “We identified that food safety is a key driver for our customers and that it therefore needs to be at the heart of everything we do. As part of this strategy we have reviewed how we handle, prepare and store our sausages and other products.

“Our exploration into this important area has led us to invest significantly, not only in new equipment and machinery, but also in using more hot water for routine cleaning, plus staff training in food safety.”
