Farmer celebrates steak success
The search for Scotland’s best steak has ended in success for one Nairn-based farmer.
A steak from a James and Donald Fraser’s 19-month-old Limousin sired heifer took the top accolade in the second Asda/ABP Beeflink steak competition of the summer season at the Royal Highland Show, Edinburgh last week.
The steak came from a 311kg carcase which is one of 120 cattle finished annually on the Frasers’ farm, which carries a 110-cow British Blue cross suckler herd put to Limousin bulls.
James Fraser said he was delighted with the win, more so as it was the first time he had entered the competition. “I was over the moon last week when we found out we’d qualified for the final eight; to win something on this scale is simply amazing.”
Taking second spot in the competition, in which the steaks were judged by celebrity chef Ainsley Harriot and a taste panel from the crowd, was a steak from Graham Mather. This one was from a Charolais cross, this time a 14-month-old young bull, the carcase of which weighed 344kg.
And in third spot was a steak from a Limousin-cross heifer from Thomas Sands. The carcase this one came from weighed in at 310kg, having been slaughtered at 22 months of age.
Asda’s senior meat trader Jim Viggars was on hand to present the prizes. He said: “To have such a fantastic selection of steaks to pick a winner from is testament to the excellent cattle that Scottish farmers supply Asda with week in, week out.
“We are delighted with the number of entries we’ve received for the competition and the quality of the steaks on show made for a great spectacle.”
Viggars said he hoped entries for the remaining two Asda/ABP steak competitions, to be held at the Great Yorkshire and Royal Welsh Shows, would live up to the very high standard set by the Scottish entries at the Royal Highland.
