Pie rolls to the top

J A Mounfield & Son came out on top, claiming the 'Overall Winner' title on the night with its Traditional Pork Pie. The Selby-based butcher also triumphed in the Speciality Hot Eating Pie category with a Farmhouse Chicken & Ham Pie, before being crowned North-Eastern Champion.

Proprietor David Mounfield said: "We're delighted but surprised, as we had a power cut just as the pies were being cooked and almost didn't make it! We've had success with the pork pie before, but we're always looking to improve it and the product evaluation events help us do this so much so, that we've now got it just right and actually scored maximum marks for these two pies.

"We're a family-run business and our success is down to a great team effort, plus we only ever use the best ingredients. Our meat is sourced from local farmers and we have our own abattoir on-site, so we have strict control over quality."

Bpex butchery and product development manager Keith Fisher added: "The North East Roadshow is always a popular event and this year certainly didn't disappoint. More than 60 butchers participated, while half of the products entered picked up a gold award.

"The awards are a great way for butchers to demonstrate to customers the quality of products they offer and really give themselves an edge over their competition."
