Rhodes to head reorganised MHS
|
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has appointed Andrew Rhodes to take over the top job for the reorganised former Meat Hygiene Service (MHS).
Rhodes, who joins the FSA from his role as director of products and services at the DVLA, will be stepping in as director of the FSA Operations Group, following the merger of the MHS with the FSA.
Rhodes, whose background includes stints at PriceWaterhouseCooper and in local government, will replace outgoing MHS chief executive Steve McGrath who was brought into the organisation in 2006 to oversee the much heralded "transformation" of the MHS to modernise and improve its operations. Rhodes will take over from McGrath in August.
Tim Smith, FSA chief executive, said: "I am very grateful for the hard work and commitment of Steve McGrath, who has worked with me to integrate the Meat Hygiene Service into the Agency and overseen the modernisation which reduced its costs and improved its effectiveness. “The FSA is very grateful to Steve and wishes him well.”
A spokesman for the FSA said Rhodes' experience at the DVLA was relevant to its work; in particular dealing with the complexity of geographically dispersed staff and a diverse regulated population.
Norman Bagley, policy director at the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers, said: "We look forward to working with [Rhodes] and hope he comes with an open mind at what is an important time in rebuilding trust between industry and the new integrated FSA delivery model."
