Dunbia installs water re-use at its Sawley plant

Dunbia has successfully implemented a new water re-use system at its site in Sawley, Lancashire, as part of its strategy to reduce carbon production and water use.

Clean water from the integrated constructed wetlands, adjacent to the Dunbia site is now used to wash dirty vehicles.

The water re-use system is expected to deliver an estimated saving of over 5m litres of water per year, the equivalent to a reduction of over 35,000 baths per year.

The system also ensures 70% less energy is used in treating the wastewater to a quality suitable for discharge to the local river Ribble. The integrated constructed wetlands, which are based on gravity flow of wastewater through a purpose built wetland system, have only two minor pump sets using the least amount of energy possible.

Denver Willis, Dunbia Group environmental and efficiency manager said: "The new water re-use system is a sustainable way for Dunbia (Sawley) to reduce its environmental impact and create cost reductions at the same time. It is a project we hope to implement across other Dunbia sites in the near future as part of our wider environmental strategy."

The new addition adds to the Sawley site’s green credentials, as it already holds environmental accreditation ISO14001.
