ABP submits plans for abattoir upgrade

The company has submitted an application to Shropshire Council to refurbish the commercial abattoir and beef processing plant, which includes Sainsbury's as one of its customers.

An ABP spokesperson said: "The plan is to upgrade the abattoir and cattle handling area to meet, and better, existing regulatory require-ments. This will enhance the welfare of animals, which is a priority for the group. This refurbishment, and an upgrading of refrigeration, are considered essential to protect the position of the plant into the future and the jobs of 700 staff."

Pending consideration, the application has a target determination date of 20 August 2010, and a public meeting has already been held.

The planned new abattoir is described as being an energy-efficient and sustainable plant, with transport access and vehicular movements on the site improved by removing current roadside loading docks.

The spokesperson added that it is not the company's intention to increase the number of animals going through the upgraded plant.
