Hilary Benn dismisses calls for bovine TB cull

 - Published:  23 February, 2010

Defra secretary of state Hilary Benn has dismissed calls for a major bovine TB cull.

Speaking at the NFU conference, Benn insisted that he didn't "want to make an already terrible disease worse than it is already".

"We are investigating badger and cattle vaccines. The vaccine is the way out of this nightmare."

Benn was responding to NFU president Peter Kendall, insisting that "no amount of testing can eradicate TB".

Kendall added: "How the major parties set out their plans to eradicate this disease will be a major factor in how farmers cast their vote in a few months’ time.”

Benn has agreed to meet representatives of the TB-affected farmers at the conference.
