New Year honours for farming industry

Ian Millar, an innovative sheep and arable farmer in Scotland who works on local livestock health schemes, was awarded an MBE, while one of Pembrokeshire’s best-known farming figures, George Mathias, was honoured for services to agriculture. The 79-year-old, who received an MBE, has played an important role in the National Farmers’ Union for many years.

Professor Val Braybrooks, dean and associate professor of the University of Lincoln’s Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Animal Sciences, received an MBE for her services to further education, higher education and the food industry.

“I am proud and thrilled to receive this honour – and delighted that education in the food manufacturing and agricultural industries has been recognised in this way,” she said.

Braybook’s career in teaching and management for the food and agricultural industries spans 30 years and she led the development of the National Centre for Food Manufacturing.

An OBE also went to Dr Sydney Neill, director of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, Northern Ireland Executive, while Maureen Kavanagh, a messenger at DEFRA, was awarded an MBE.
