Manufacturers’ disappointment over Copenhagen outcome

It says the United Nation’s conference on climate change fell significantly short of expectations and left many questions unanswered.

Andrew Kuyk, FDF’s director of sustainability, said: “In common with many other sectors, UK food and drink manufacturers were looking to Copenhagen to set a clear and legally binding framework for concerted and equitable international action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and encourage the development of new low-carbon technologies to help address the challenges of climate change while continuing to ensure food security.”

He said the outcome would inevitably add to uncertainties for all businesses in a very difficult economic and competitive climate.

Added Kuyk: “In the meantime, FDF members remain committed to reducing their environmental impact through FDF’s Five-fold Environmental Ambition, which we will be reviewing next year in light of these and any further developments.”

FDF’s action plan includes aims to send zero food and packaging waste to landfill from 2015 and to play a full part in tackling climate change by reducing CO2 emissions by 20% by 2010 against a 1990 baseline.
