Meat industry mourns Taylor
The meat industry has been paying its respects after prominent halal campaigner David Taylor MP, 63, passed away over the Christmas holidays, following a heart attack on Boxing Day.
The Labour representative for Leicestershire North West, who was an Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee member, had only met with Farming Minister Jim Fitzpatrick in November, along with Janan Meat MD Naved Syed, to discuss gaining ministerial support for a halal assurance scheme.
Syed said: “It is with regret that I heard of the death of David Taylor MP. My condolences to his family.
“Over the past 18 months David has worked with me to help promote better standards of production and the introduction of a standard assurance scheme for the slaughter of halal meat for the benefit of the Muslim community here in the UK.”
Taylor had backed the special Eblex DVD on halal, produced last year, and had also recently asked questions in the House of Commons regarding procurement of halal meat in the Prison Service.
Bpex foodservice sector trade manager Tony Goodger said: “I was fortunate to work with him (Taylor) and Naved on the Eblex project work and found him to be a genuine and focused individual, who was passionate about animal welfare and the need to improve standards for halal meat. He will be sadly missed, but I hope that other Members of Parliament will now take up this issue.”
