Co-op makes turkey supply promise

The Co-operative has expanded its ‘Grown by Us’ range to include free-range turkeys in the run-up to Christmas, the company has announced.

It is the first time The Co-operative’s Grown by Us range has been extended to include meat in a brand that is either guaranteed to be grown by The Co-operative Farms or made using ingredients grown by the business.

Co-operative Farms MD Christine Tacon said: “Bronze turkeys are fantastic and a worthy addition to our Grown by Us range. They are free-range birds that have been reared with a lot of care, and we’re sure they will be very popular.

“Our farm staff have been checking on them daily and, on several occasions, have had to help escaped turkeys return to the flock. We raised a few birds last year and gave them to staff, and feedback was that they were the tastiest turkeys they had ever eaten, so this year we’ve raised a lot more for Co-operative Food stores.”

The Truly Irresistible fresh free-range bronze whole turkeys, with a ‘Reared by Us’ label, will be sold in selected stores from 19 December, costing £45 for each 5kg bird. The birds are selected by The

Co-operative as chicks and reared using traditional methods, allowing them to roam freely in and around trees and with access to an open-sided shelter with deep straw.
As well as free-range bronze turkeys, The Co-operative is also extending its higher-welfare Elmwood standard to all its fresh and frozen own-brand turkey and turkey crowns this Christmas.
