Union threatens 2 Sisters strike

Three hundred and eighty workers are being asked by Unite whether or not to strike, after 2 Sisters sacked 59 employees who were involved in “unconstitutional strike action”, according to the firm.

The dispute arose after a security guard was alleged to have racially abused a factory floor steward in July.

Unite deputy general secretary Jack Dromey said: “Fifty-nine workers and their union representatives were sacked for standing up to racism in the workplace. Now hundreds of workers at 2 Sisters will decide if they, too, stand up to racism and support their victimised workmates. The message from the workforce is clear – this is wrong and they will strike for what is right.”

If there was a ‘yes’ vote, Unite added, a strike would be held next year, with the result expected to be announced on 4 January.

A spokesman for 2 Sisters said the company rejected the claims of racism made by Unite and that the workers were dismissed because of an illegal strike. He added that there will be plans put in place if any strike action takes place, so customers would not be affected.
