Chancellor urged to take action

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) is urging the Chancellor to use Wednesday’s Pre-Budget Report to outline clearly the ways in which the Government will help UK food manufacturers.
The FDF has recently published a ‘checklist’ outlining 20 simple steps that Government could take to support food and drink producers and is urging the Government to ensure the UK’s biggest manufacturing sector is at the heart of efforts to rebalance the economy. The FDF is also one of the 11 leading trade associations to back the Manufacturing Alliance’s detailed submission to the Chancellor, which highlights other practical measures the Government can implement to provide a stable and supportive business environment for manufacturers.
FDF director of communications Julian Hunt said: “Food and drink manufacturing is both a strategic and an economically vital component of the UK economy. We will be looking closely at what the Chancellor has to say and hope to see signs that he has listened to the needs of manufacturers, particularly those in our sector who play such a key role in the economic health of the nation.”
The food sector is estimated to the UK’s largest manufacturing industry, accounting for 14% of output and the FDF added it is one of the few that has weathered the worst of the recession, helping to underpin overall economic activity.
