ABP to close Blackburn abattoir

 - Published:  03 December, 2009

Anglo Beef Processors (ABP) has revealed plans to close its abattoir in Blackburn, Lancashire.

The company said that the decision to close the plant follows on from a revew of its increased processing capacity after recent acquisitions in Guildford, Surrey and Sturminster Newton, Dorset.

A spokesperson said ABP is continuing to invest in its UK processing base to “deliver a network of low cost, strategically located efficient processing facilities”, pointing out that has only recently completed a significant upgrade at ABP Shrewsbury to increase capacity at the site.

“Having operated the abattoir at Blackburn for a number of years, it is with regret that we are closing the site but it has become clear that the best commercial decision for ABP is that our ongoing investment programme should be focused on our other facilities throughout Great Britain,” he said.

ABP hopes to minimise job losses and plans to offer all staff at Blackburn alternative jobs within the ABP Group following the statutory consultation process.
