Beef farmer reaps rewards of champion steer
A beef farmer has walked away from a livestock show with nearly £4,000 after his prime steer impressed judges and vendors alike.
Bernard Price of Hay-on-Eye received over £10/kg for his beast after it was awarded the champion prize at last weekend’s English Winter Fair livestock showcase in Stafford.
The Limousin-sired steer came in at 380kg deadweight and was applauded by carcase judge, the Nottinghamshire-based butcher Robert Bowring, for its tremendous eye muscle. “When quartered it (the eye muscle) was just incredible,” said Bowring.
Price won £1,500 in the annual competition, which is sponsored by beef processing group ABP, and won a further £1,000 because the steer was home-bred, and a £200 Class prize.
The farmer’s pocket was bolstered even further when competing buyers pushed the carcase sale price to £1,592.39 in the English Winter Fair’s traditional auction, with Bowring eventually
securing it for his six independent retail outlets.
