Kendall’s reigns supreme at North East roadshow

The Harrogate butcher’s speciality cold-eating ‘Pork, Apple & Black Pudding Pie’ beat 120 products from 55 butchers to the top prize at the show, which took place at the Great Yorkshire Showground. The shop’s hot-eating Steak, Ale & Mushroom Pie, Pork Fillet with Pancetta ready meal and Meatballs in Tomato Sauce also impressed judges and won their respective categories.

Paul Kendall, owner of two shops, was overwhelmed by his team’s success. He said: “It still hasn’t sunk in, but we couldn’t be happier. While we’ve done well previously and been category champion, this is our first time as overall winner for the region and it’s the icing on the cake!

“These awards are fantastic news for the business and I’m blown away by the interest we’ve already received. Of course, we’ll be sharing the success with customers too; with a sample of our pies and a taste of the whiskey we were presented with!”

Other winners on the day included 20-year-old Rob Inman of D J Fenton, who scored 99 out of 100 for his festive ‘Pork, Cranberry and Rosemary’ Sausage and took home the title of Young Sausage Maker champion.

BPEX butchery and product development manager Keith Fisher said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout at Harrogate, and the number of awards presented on the night is indicative of the consistent quality we have come to expect from butchers in the North East.

“The number of young apprentices taking part and achieving near-perfect marks is cause for celebration and bodes well for the future of high street butchers. Of course, the level of innovation and dedication being shown by all butchers at these events is fantastic and we congratulate each and every one on their award.”

The next event in the 2009/2010 roadshow takes place at the Cedric Ford Pavilion, The Newark Showground in Nottinghamshire on 27 January 2010.
