Butcher recalls colourful past
Not many butchers can claim they have played host to pop star Leo Sayer or 1970s Top of the Pops dancers Pan's People, but Hartlepool-based Ron Trotter has managed to pack a lot into his years.
The aptly-named 77-year-old, who has recorded his exploits in a new autobiography called Just a Lad from West Hartlepool, spent 25 years in the pork butchery trade as well as a decade as a nightclub owner.
Trotter whose name featured in a Daily Mail article on perfect professional monickers owned six shops, a cooked meats factory and a bakery at one time.
He also came 12th in the 1949 British Gymnastic Championship, was a PE instructor in the RAF and has spent his retirement years touring the world playing golf.
Proceeds of the book, which chronicles Trotter's working life and his experiences in civic roles, including Secretary and President of the Hartlepool Meat Traders' Association, go to the Alzheimer's Society.
