A Sidmouth butcher plans to appeal his council's refusal to allow him to display a Q Guild sign outside his shop.

A Sidmouth butcher plans to appeal his council's refusal to allow him to display a Q Guild sign outside his shop.

East Devon District Council has turned down Stuart Hayman's application to hang the guild's white, green and gold aluminium signature sign outside his Church St shop a listed building because it "does not enhance or preserve the conservation area".

"They've said the pole is not ornate enough and the sign is not made of wood," said Hayman. "But it looks traditional and there are other poles in the town that are identical. There are also loads of signs that aren't wooden."

The Q Guild said other members had avoided the issue by hanging signs inside.
