Cockroach ban for butcher

Environmental health officers have gone to court to get a closure order against an Oxford butcher after discovering a cockroach infestation described as "unbelievable".

The infestation was discovered during a visit to JM Halal by health officers. The closure order, granted by Oxford magistrates, will be lifted when the shop is no longer regarded a public health risk.

Health officer Richard Kuziara commented: "The cockroaches were everywhere. They were in the seals of the fridges and in the equipment."

JM Halal manager Usman Mir said: "We have improved the shop and cleaned it up. We have co-operated with Environmental Health and are doing everything we can to reopen."
