Turkey awards celebrate success
Morrisons, KellyBronze and a Warrington butcher’s shop have been celebrating success in the 2009 British Turkey Awards.
Jenkinsons Butchers in High Street, Golborne, pipped more than 20 other finalists to the title of British Turkey Butcher of the Year this week at the awards ceremony in London’s Claridge’s.
Macdonald is the fifth generation of his family to run the business, and has roast turkey breast as his year-round turkey speciality, cooking it on the premises and slicing to order. “He cuts what you want when you want and will always endeavour to provide whatever obscure cut of meat you have seen on TV. First Class,” declared a nominating customer.
Other winners included KellyBronze, which took the Best Premium Christmas category for the third year running, thanks to a combination of “stylish packaging, clear cooking instructions and superb taste”.
Morrisons bagged a trio of gongs, winning the Best Christmas Convenience category with Luxury Turkey Crown with pork, sage and onion stuffing and the Best barbecue award, as well as scooping the coveted British Turkey Retailer of the Year title.
Lincs Turkeys won the catering category, while Bernard Matthews’ Southern Fried Golden Drummers was a winner in Best Meal Solution. Cranberry Foods topped the branded section for its Ready to Roast Turkey Breast and Thigh Joint with Pork, Sage and Buttered Onion Stuffing, which the judges said had “real shelf appeal”. Snowbird Foods Ltd Turkey Tuckers meatballs was judged Best innovation, while Adlington Oak Smoked Turkey Drumstick won Best Ready to Eat.
The evening also raised more than £5,000 for the children’s medical charity SPARKS.
