Princess Royal elected to the court of WCB
HRH The Princess Royal has been elected as one of 15 assistants to the Court of the Worshipful Company of Butchers. She has agreed to serve as renter assistant this year and will become master next year.
Jeffrey Davies, who trades at Smithfield Market and has a factory in Gillingham, Kent, succeeds Brian Wheatley as master for the coming year.
Davies said his watchwords would be faith, hope and charity, shared with confidence, trust and forbearance. His chosen charity is Treloars School in Alton, Hampshire, which provides education, therapy, medical support and independence training for physically disabled young people.
Wheatley told liverymen at the Company's AGM that his year as master had been a privilege and a pleasure. "On your behalf, I have met and hosted royalty, a prime minister, ambassadors, high commissioners of both New Zealand and Australia, captains of industry, high-ranking members of the clergy and many masters of the 108 livery companies." A dinner for his chosen charity, the Little Sisters of the Poor, raised £12,000.
Nicholas Anstee, who becomes Lord Mayor of London in October, was elected one of five wardens and becomes the first serving member of the Court to hold the office since 1852. It means the Company will play a prominent role in this year's Lord Mayor's Show in November.
