Producers urged to sign up to SALSA
Livestock producers who want to build local supply chains are being urged to register with the Safe and Local Supplier Approval scheme (SALSA).
More than 1,500 companies have now registered with the scheme, including 500 major buyers, and the NFU wants more farmers to get on board.
Head of the NFU’s food chain unit Lee Woodger said: “SALSA offers our members a great business opportunity. The scheme is a direct route to retailers, hospitality and catering suppliers looking to source local food.
“With the current trend seeing a national increase in the demand for local sourcing I would encourage our members to take advantage of SALSA and market their fresh, quality produce to its maximum potential.”
SALSA aims to provide major retailers and hospitality providers with a safe source of high quality, locally produced food. Members are inspected and listed on an online directory, which shows approved producers searchable by region or product.
The scheme was launched in 2007 by some of the food industry’s largest trade associations including the NFU, the British Hospitality Association, the British Retail Consortium and the Food and Drink Federation.
