Abattoir closed for emitting odours
A Carlisle abattoir is under investigation by the Environment Agency for emitting “noxious smells”.
An enforcement notice has been issued to West Scottish Lamb Ltd of Brunthill Road, effectively suspending the company’s operations until it undertakes works to resolve the issue.
The Environment Agency was alerted to the problem yesterday (24 August) and carried out an immediate investigation into the cause of the odours.
Jon Mellor, EA regulatory officer, said, “Following a number of complaints from local residents and businesses, we have taken swift action and have issued the company with an enforcement notice.
“The company must now ensure that it carries out the necessary repairs to resolve the situation, and ensure that this does not happen again. We will continue to monitor the situation to see if any further action is required. Our investigation into the incident will continue.”
