Yorkshire butchers prepare for top contest

Taking place at Bradford’s Cedar Court Hotel and organised by the Confederation of Yorkshire Butchers Councils, the competition last year attracted 300 entries county-wide. It is also open to Yorkshire’s farm shops and bakers who make products on their premises.

Premier trophy winners in 2008, all expected to return to defend their titles, were:

· Supreme champion pork pie – Voakes Pies, Whixley Grange, York.

· Reserve supreme champion pork pie – Bentleys Butchers, Pudsey, Leeds.

· Supreme champion sausage – Ellisons Butchers, Cullingworth, Keighley.

· Reserve supreme champion sausage – Farmer Copley Farm Shop, Purston, Pontefract.

· Champion black pudding – Kendalls Butchers, Pateley Bridge, Harrogate.

· Champion beefburger – Sutcliffes Butchers, Skipton.

All championship, 1st, 2nd and 3rd-placed class winners will receive individual trophies and diplomas recognising their successes, while each finalist will be presented with Yorkshire Rose Award Diplomas to display in their premises.

A competition programme and entry forms – there is no limit on the number of entries – will be sent directly to all butchers in Yorkshire by the National Federation of Meat & Food Traders during September.

The Confederation president’s annual dinner dance – Bradford butcher Ian Hopkins, whose shop is in Birkenshaw, holds office this year – will be held on the eve of the contest, Saturday, 17 October, at Cedar Court Hotel.
