Asda announces Yorkshire steak champion
Asda’s Extra Special steak tasting challenge came to a head this weekend, with a final cook-off at the Yorkshire Show.
The 10 steaks – selected from Asda’s York beef suppliers and matured for 28 days – were judged on their flavour, succulence and tenderness by celebrity chef Brian Turner and Asda chef Simon Shaw.
After some deliberation, the judges gave the top title of Supreme Champion to C E Exton & Son. The winning steak came from a 25-month-old Limousin cross heifer with a carcase grading of U, which had been finished on the Exton’s mixed farm at Wheldrake, south of York.
Asda senior red meat buyer Jim Viggars said: “The judges were very impressed with the standard of all the steaks and had praise for the Yorkshire beef producers who had entered the competition.
“We had more entries than ever this year and the winning steak proves you can have conformation without sacrificing eating quality. Asda is proud to support its farmer suppliers and will continue to help them produce the highest-quality beef.”
Chef Brian Turner added: “Every one of the steaks presented was of an excellent standard and offered consistency, so it was a difficult task to choose the overall winner.”
