Welsh border abattoir to re-open

The abattoir has been acquired by local investor group Daysdrove Holdings Limited, which plans to establish a "very different business" from the wholesale operation previously operating on the site.

"Daysdrove will initially provide a service for farmers and butchers in the area requiring contract slaughtering of locally sourced cattle, sheep and pigs," said Daysdrove director Malcolm Corfield

"In time, the business will work with its customers to develop retail meat brands with local provenance, full traceability and highest quality as their defining characteristics."

Corfield described the abattoir as a "much needed facility", adding that its re-establishment will create a dozen new local jobs, provide an alternative marketing outlet for farmers and allow the region’s butchers, restaurants, farm shops and caterers to source high quality local meat.

So far, over sixty private individuals and businesses have invested in the project and Daysdrove is actively seeking further investment. The group is also looking to recruit a general manager to oversee the establishment of the business.
