Pig farmers march on London in price protest

The demonstration, which was organised by the National Pig Association (NPA), will take place opposite Downing Street to lobby the country's policy-makers and raise awareness of the crisis that has taken the industry to the brink of collapse.

Veteran demonstrator Winnie the Pig, who rose to fame during the 2001 pig industry demonstration, will be at the rally, having come out of retirement to make one last stand.

In addition, the NPA will be presenting the 'Pigs Are Worth It' campaign petition to Downing Street. Over 13,000 signatures have already been logged on the petition, which calls for fairer prices for pigs.

BPEX chairman Stewart Houston said: "The fact that we now have over 10,000 signatures on the petition is excellent news. It just goes to show that there is a lot of support out there from people who really do care about the plight of Britain's pig farmers."

The rally has already attracted national news coverage and the pig campaign single - 'Stand by your Ham' - was played on the BBC's Breakfast News this morning. With many pig farmers at the edge of financial catastrophe, demonstrators hope that this one last push will be enough to save the beleaguered industry.
