Welsh awareness sessions on new animal transport rules
The Welsh Assembly Government is holding a series of awareness sessions to explain the new EU requirements for transporting livestock.
The regulations are designed to safeguard the welfare of animals in transport and include a requirement for anyone moving live vertebrate animals further than 65km, in connection with an economic activity, to hold a certificate of competence following an assessment.
Assessments for competence are carried out by independent bodies designated by the Welsh Assembly government. Competence certificates can only be awarded by these accredited organisations.
Although the regulations came into effect in January, the Welsh Assembly government has agreed that, for domestic journeys only, no enforcement action will be taken until the end of April 2008, due to the effects of the foot-and-mouth disease and bluetongue outbreaks.
The sessions will take place at locations around Wales. Venues open at 1.15pm and sessions start at 1.30pm:
10 March - Royal Welsh Pavilion (Showground), Builth Wells
11 March - Celtica, Machynlleth, Powys
18 March - Carmarthen Quins Club, Carmarthen
19 March - Mariners Hotel, Haverfordwest
26 March - Coleg Meirion, Glynllifon, Caernarfon
27 March - Brooke House Mill, Ruthin Road, Denbigh
