Making a flap about turkeys
TV chef Phil Vickery has launched a new competition alongside the British Turkey Federation to get more turkey featured on the menus of Britain’s schools.
The ITV cooking maestro showed members of a cookery club at St Andrew’s youth club in Westminster how to make turkey tortillas and is encouraging all primary and secondary school children across the country to create turkey dishes they would most like to see on their school menu in the ‘Five-a-day plus British turkey’ campaign.
British Turkey Federation marketing spokesperson Catriona Lee said: “A lot of school cooks already know the benefits of putting British turkey on the menu regularly. We want to reward those people and also encourage others to experiment with dishes using turkey. Burgers, Bolognese, stews and meat balls are all delicious made with turkey – but let’s see what the school cooks and pupils come up with.”
The rules for competition state that each dish must contain at least two vegetables and two winners will each receive £1,000 for new equipment for their school, plus a bike for themselves.
At the same time, school cooks across the country are being challenged to send in their recipes for a turkey dish that they think would go down well with pupils in all classes. The winner will receive £1,000 equipment for their school plus gift vouchers to spend on themselves.
The idea behind the challenge is to drive home the message that British turkey is healthy and tasty, said the Federation, as well as being exceptionally versatile, easy to use and readily available all year round.
Both competitions will close on 20 November 2009 and the judging panel will include Phil Vickery. More details and entry forms can be found on www.britishturkey.co.uk or by calling 0800 783 9994.
