Competitions galore in Perth
The Scottish Meat Trade Fair, held in Perth last month, is reported to have attracted over 400 visitors, with traders seeing high levels of interest.
Event organisers have said that product competitions saw significantly higher entries, with the prize for the best stand being awarded to Gillian Hamilton of Breast Cancer Awareness by Scottish Federation of Meat Traders Association (SFMTA) president Stuart Christie.
The SFMTA stand saw Huntly butcher Gary Raeburn, who is a Scottish finalist in BBC3's Young Butcher of the Year Contest, carve a display of lamb, with one side done in traditional cuts and the other in added-value products.
Winners of the 2009 Meat Skills Competition included Lee Gilchrist from Greens Fine Meats, Grantown on Spey who won the under-22 category and his boss, Barry Green, who won the over-22 category.
The contest attracted 25 entrants, including Kirsty Moore who became the first female ever to compete in the finals. Scott Carson of TH Carson, Dalbeattie, won the 2009 Haggis Championship, taking the crown from local Dalbeattie rival Alan Elliott of Dalbeattie Fine Foods.
