Meat man to be knighted

A leading businessman in the meat industry has given his reaction after receiving a knighthood in the Queen’s birthday honours.

David Samworth, president of Samworth Brothers, has been awarded the title for his services to charity where he has worked with AIDS orphans in Kenya and Tanzania as well as co-sponsoring City Academies in Leicester, Nottingham and Mansfield.

He said: “I’m both delighted and honoured to have received such an incredible award and really have to thank not only my family for their continual support, but also the 7,000 strong team at Samworth Brothers. I would not have had the opportunity to do any of this without them and can’t thank them enough.”

Samworth Brothers claims at least 1% of its profits are donated to charity and Sir David set up the Samworth Brothers Charity Challenge that brings employees, suppliers and customers together to raise money for charity.

“We’ve just had this year’s Samworth Brothers Charity Challenge in the Lake District and it was a great success with £340,000 raised for charities. The whole team should feel really proud of everything they have achieved,” Sir David added.

Meanwhile William Lloyd Williams of William Lloyd Williams & Son will receive an OBE the government has announced.
