Personality 2009: results are now in
Voting has now closed on the SuperMeat Personality of the Year and our four finalists will have to wait for the evening itself, on 2 July, to find out who has triumphed in the popular vote.
Four leading industry players were vying for the title: Asda's Jim Viggars, Cranswick's Bernard Hoggarth, EBLEX's Richard Lowe and 2 Sisters' Andrew Maunder. Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, which organises the awards, said: "We've had a record number of votes and the competition has been very tough - but there can be only one winner and we'll be announcing the victor on the night."
The SuperMeat & Fish Awards are now in their 10th year and recognise excellence in meat and fish retailing. Awards are given for both products and stores and, at the end of the night, one retailer will be declared the overall SuperMeat Retailer of the Year.
The awards will see the return of our popular Head Office Initiative of the Year and new categories have also been introduced to the product awards, including Best Sustainable Product and Best Value Product.
Bedington said: "With both the environment and the economy rarely out of the headlines at the moment, it makes sense to recognise those retailers and suppliers that are producing products that meet the current mood.
"As an industry, we need to do everything we can to ensure our products are sustainable and limit harm to the environment and, with consumers having less to spend, it's great to see some real innovation and quality at the economy end of the market."
Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, The Co-operative and Marks & Spencer are taking part in this year's event. With an impressive field of entries, the competition is set to be as exciting as ever.
