New course offers learning at a distance
The University of Bristol is offering the meat industry the chance to pick up new skills at a distance, launching a new distance learning version of its popular MSc Meat Science course.
The course is already well-established and widely acknowledged as providing first-class training, and the distance-learning format will mirror the full-time residential course in terms of content and assessment, but without the need to attend residentially.
The study material is available on a web-based platform that supports written, audio and video material. All that’s required is a computer, printer and internet access. Occasional visits to Bristol are included to support distance learning and encourage networking among students, but without disrupting normal work commitments.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to gain a recognised qualification from one the UK’s top universities without the constraint of attending residentially,” said Dr Peter Sheard, course organiser.
Three modules are available in 2009/10 – biochemistry and meat quality, animal welfare and meat processing – with four others to follow in 2010/11.
The modules can be taken individually or as part of an integrated programme leading to a postgraduate certificate, diploma or an MSc degree.
The degree programme, which includes a commercially relevant work-based research project, can be completed over several years by accumulating credits from each module.
