Butcher's business best in Yorkshire
A Scarborough-based butcher’s business has been declared one of the most enterprising family operation in Yorkshire.
T Gibson’s Butchers was chosen by a panel of experts to be named Yorkshire’s most dynamic and exciting family-run business.
The “Family Affair” competition was organised by Barclays Local Business and was aimed at recogising the importance of family firms.
The business, run by butcher Tony Gibson, took home £1,500 and a year’s free business advice from Barclays.
Tony set up his first shop when he was just 21. Before long, his wife saw an opportunity to establish a delicatessen nearby, which now sells fine cheeses and home-cooked foods. Completing the family unit, the Gibsons were joined by their son, who now rears pigs to provide the business with quality pork for their pies and sausages. They impressed the judges by sustaining growth across a difficult year, and by their ambitions to expand in the future.
Judge Levi Roots, the entrepreneur behind Reggae Reggae Sauce, said: "Gibson's is just a fantastic business. I wouldn't have got where I am today without the backing of my family – so I know how important the support of relatives is to business success. The Gibsons clearly stick together, and they truly deserve to win.
"I hope we've added a bit of zest to their business, and spiced up their prospects – and that they continue to shine as an outstanding example of a family business."
John Davis, marketing director for Barclays Local Business, said: "Our search for the UK's best family businesses has revealed to us just how impressive and important family firms are. They're the backbone of the UK's economy, and we think they deserve recognition for all their hard work."
