Frustration over lack of progress

He said that while the BMPA had forged a much better relationship with the Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) and Food Standards Agency (FSA) recently, the growing economic pressures were making his members a "little frustrated over the lack of progress from regulators".

The FSA was now listening and making headway in transforming the MHS, he said, but pointed to ongoing dissatisfaction over the proposed charging increases when more could be done to cut costs. "Even more frustrating is the lack of progress on genuine reform of controls," he said.

The head of the FSA had said the meat industry was more regulated than the nuclear sector, he noted. "That gives the impression we're pushing on an open door, but we're seeing no changes," he said.
