Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC), publicised its genetic improvement scheme at the National Sheep Association (NSA) 2009 event in Betws y Coed, but warned that funds are limited

HCC project executive Dewi Hughes said: “HCC has launched a programme to help pedigree breeders improve genetic performance in their flocks and herds.

“It includes up to 90% grant support for about 100 farmers per year to take part in performance-recording for hill and upland breeds, with up to 50% support available for terminal breeds. There is also support for about 50 farmers a year to join an artificial insemination and embryo transfer programme.”

It is expected that farmers will benefit by up to £4 per lamb in increased revenue through the use of improved genetics, which influence the growth and carcase traits of lambs entering the food chain.
