A treat for bacon connoisseurs

Two butchers have won an award for their delicious bacon in 'The Cure for Modern Times' BPEX Competition, a nationwide search for the best bacon cure.

A F Huddleston's Butchers in Windermere, Cumbria, took the top accolade in the independent retailer category with its 'Sweet Dry Cured Treacle Back Bacon', and the Country Butcher in Huntley, Gloucestershire, walked away with the same accolade in the foodservice category with its 'Tewkesbury Cure'.

The winner of the processor category was Dalehead Foods in Cambridge with 'Waitrose Sweet Cured with Black Treacle Smoked Back Bacon'.

The runners-up in the independent retail category were Wych Bacon & Pork in Malpas for its 'Maple Smoke Sweet Mustard Back Bacon' and Five Winds Farm Smokehouse and Butchery in Woodbridge, Suffolk, for its 'Suffolk Free Range Back Bacon Cured in Guinness and Black Treacle' in the foodservice category.

Cranswick in Hull, East Yorkshire, won the processor category with its 'British Dry Cured Oak Smoked Streaky Bacon'.

The awards were presented by journalist and TV presenter Janet Street Porter. She said: "My congratulations go to all the finalists, but we really have to acknowledge the three overall winners from an incredibly tough competition is still thriving in our country - something we should all celebrate."

Street Porter added: "Remember to look out for the Quality Standard Mark when you buy bacon, as this ensures that you are purchasing meat produce by QSM farmers, who uphold high standards of welfare, quality control and feasibility."

David Tomlins, proprietor of the Country Butcher was delighted with his win. "We are really pleased to win with our Tewkesbury Cure, which we came up with about 10 years ago and updated last year. Our customers love it. It confirms we are are getting it right."
