Macsween taste success in Scottish food awards

Macsween of Edinburgh took the title of Business of the Year at the awards held in Glasgow last night, which were attended by Scottish Food Minister Richard Lochhead and more than 300 leading figures from the food and drink industry.

Lochhead said: “These awards are a welcome opportunity to showcase our world-class, mouth-watering produce, and in Homecoming Year what better time to be spreading the message that Scotland truly is a land of food and drink.”

The name Macsween of Edinburgh is synonymous with haggis and in addition to the Business of the Year title, the company won the category award for environmental sustainability.

Other winners on the night included Carmichael Estate Farm Meats from Biggar, which took the title of product innovation of the year for its venison rashers, made from farmed venison haunch, which are claimed to be “better than bacon”.

Meanwhile the meat category was taken by former Butcher’s Shop of the Year winner, Simon Howie Butchers, which impressed the judges with its Scottish Dry Cure Bacon.

The various category winners were chosen from a short list of more than 40 food and drink products and companies by panels of specialist judges.
