Meat plant fire throws supply into chaos

The Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service are still on the scene of the blaze at Campbells Prime Meat in West Lothian, which supplies beef and poultry to foodservice establishments across Scotland.

Firefighters have warned that the entire factory could be destroyed by the fire, which police are treating as “suspicious”.

Fire service area commander David Young told local press: “The building looks like it will be a loss. There will be some parts that are intact, but they will still be very badly smoke-damaged. The south side of the building was worst affected.”

The plant has been forced to suspend all deliveries, leaving local restaurants desperately trying to source alternative meat supplies.

Michelin-starred chef Martin Wishart has vowed to support the plant, describing it as one of the biggest and most important meat suppliers in Scotland.

It is understood that the fire began in the company’s warehouse in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Firefighters were called to the scene after air controllers at Edinburgh Aiport spotted plumes of smoke rising 2,000ft into the air. No one has been hurt in the blaze.
