Turkey awards entries sought
Top turkey products from across the industry are in with a chance to scoop a prestigious award as the 13th annual turkey awards gets under way.
The event, organised by the British Turkey Federation, helps to raise the profile of turkey outside the Christmas season and this year’s awards see the introduction of a new category to reflect changing shopping habits – best meal solution.
This new category, which encompasses the growing added-value sector of pre-prepared turkey portions, will be judged on the appeal of the product’s packaging, as well as its convenience and suitability for target audience, such as busy mums.
Catriona Lee, of the British Turkey Federation’s marketing committee, said: “We are looking for the best British turkey products around – whether dressed whole birds for Christmas, convenience portions or meal solutions.”
There is a special category for butchers who sell British turkey all year round. “We are looking for innovative counter displays, versatile portion options and value-added recipe dishes, such as sausages, burgers, pies and pasties. Butchers can enter themselves – and we are also asking customers to nominate their favourite butcher," said Lee.
A panel of independent judges from consumer and trade food media will test the products for taste, quality, innovation, packaging and point-of-sale support, including quality assurance marks. Turkey meat under the Quality British Turkey scheme is now eligible to carry the Red Tractor logo mark on-pack alongside the QBT mark of approval.
The judging panel will also include a member of the public, chosen in a national ballot. Lee said: “It is the consumer who chooses, buys and eats the products, so we believe it is right that a representative of these consumers should help judge the entries.”
Winners of the 12 awards, will be announced at a themed black tie charity dinner and dance at Claridge’s Ballroom, London, on 24 September.
