Butcher shuts up shop
A Sunderland butcher is set to shut up shop after more than 30 years of business. Jimmy Shovlin, 64, has run his thriving butcher’s shop in Redmond Road, Red House, for 33 years.
He is closing up and retiring because most of the other businesses in the road, and their customers along with them, have disappeared.
Thanking his customers for their support over the years Jimmy said: "I'm very sorry to have to do this, but you can't run on fresh air."
When he opened in 1976, his shop was at the heart of a busy shopping parade, but now the traditional shops are gone, their trade taken up by the supermarkets.
"The grocer was there when I came, there was a good baker and I built on from there. There was a nice fish shop that used beef dripping and, being a butcher, I thought that was brilliant.
"There was a post office and we had all the pensioners coming in. But in the past six years, things have gone downhill, downhill, downhill. The post office has now closed and most of the businesses are gone.
"When I first started there were four butchers in Red House, and now there's just me – and it's sad, but now I'm closing too."
