With an increasing number of farm shops retailing quality meat, EBLEX has decided to launch a competition specifically for farm shop butchers.

It is hoped that the competition, which will be launched at the 2009 Beef Expo, will demonstrate the high standards of beef butchery across the sector.

Clive Brown, western regional manager for EBLEX, said: “This new competition will highlight the ever-growing trend for farm shops to retail their own meat. The development of these butchery skills is allowing farm shop businesses to grow, as well as helping to make quality beef more available to consumers.”

The competition is open to all farm shop butchers in England who sell beef. Each competitor will have to produce at least eight different cuts or products within a one-hour time limit, add value with marinades and seasonings where possible and display their finished products.

They will also have to produce seasoned beef burgers, which will be cooked and tasted as part of the judging process.
