Berwick butcher keeps on running

 - Published:  03 April, 2009

A Berwick-upon-Tweed butcher is to run the London Marathon for the eighth and final time this month to raise money for a relative’s heart operation.

Derek Morton, 52, who works at Fairbairn’s in Northumberland, will take part in the event to raise money for a relative of his wife, who has a hole in his heart. Four-year-old Manoj Karunarathne, who lives in Sri Lanka, needs a life-saving operation and Derek hopes to raise £3,500 to get an Indian surgeon to fly to Colombo to help Manoj.

Derek said: “I’m really hoping that we will be able to transform this young boy’s life for what is a relatively small amount of money. Being a father myself, with a beautiful four-year-old daughter called Saskia, I know what Manoj’s parents are going through emotionally at the moment and anything I can do to help can only ease their situation.”

He added: “It is seven years since I did my last marathon, but knowing the worthiness of this cause will certainly put a spring in my step. There is not a target time for the run over the 26.2m London course – my main goal is to finish.”
