JW Mettrick & Son scores win for small trader

Peak district butcher JW Mettrick & Son has beaten off the big guns to win ‘Best Online Butcher’ at the Good Housekeeping Food Awards 2009.

Mettrick’s fought stiff competition from big online businesses – including Donald Russell – to win the online category of the awards, which were held in London on 23 February. Owner John Mettrick said he was “over the moon” to win the award.

The win came as a shock for the butcher, who only found out about it when he got a call from Good Housekeeping magazine saying he had been shortlisted. “The editor invited us down to London, so me and my missus jumped on the train and went along,” he said. “There were some big online businesses, so we didn’t think we had a chance.”

The judging panel, including celebrity chef Valentine Warner, Jane Asher and Good Housekeeping food consultant Prue Leith, cited “the good range on offer and the fact the sausages are made on the premises with locally sourced meat” as reasons for the win.
