TSO home in on Wales

 - Published:  03 April, 2009

An investigation by Trading Standards Officers in Wales has found that restaurants are regularly claiming that lamb is locally sourced in Wales when in fact it has come from England

The TSO probe found that 47% of chain restaurants regularly describe their menus incorrectly, perhaps in a bid to boost sales by attracting customers with locally sourced food. All types of dishes were wrongly described, but the TSOs picked out a tendency to re-name imported lamb as home-sourced Welsh Lamb.

Senior North Wales TSO spokesman Meilir Edwards said: “The results were quite disappointing, as you wouldn’t expect nearly half of the nationwide ones to fail.”

The TSO says it will re-inspect the restaurants shortly and if there is no improvement, prosecutions may follow.
