Cumbrian slaughterhouse fined £6,000

A Cumbrian abattoir has been fined a total of more than £6,000 for breaching slaughtering regulations.

West Scottish Lamb of Carlisle, and its owner Charles Kirkpatrick, were convicted of failing to slaughter correctly a cow aged over thirty months.

The abattoir and its owner were also convicted, during the hearing before Carlisle magistrates, of slaughtering cows without the correct ear tags and passports.

The prosecution was brought by the Meat Hygiene Service. The offences took place in 2006.The company was fined £2,350 with £4,000 costs.

After the case Kirkpatrick said he was considering taking the case to appeal.
